Chapter 9
The following day, I arrived at the hospital sporting dark circles under my eyes.
My troubled inind robbed me of sleep.
Upon reaching the hospital, my first stop was Lola’s room.
Thankfully, this time, Michael refrained from attempting to forcibly remove her, likely due to police intervention. When I entered, Lola was gazing at Michael with affection, her docile demeanor tugging at my heartstrings. Compared to her, my only stroke of luck was not enduring abuse from Eason.
Michael eyed me warily upon my arrival.
“You must be Dr. Moore,” he accused. “Your actions caused my wife’s miscarriage and dragged me to the police
station!”
“Leave. You and my family aren’t compatible.”
I looked at Michael coldly as he was talking nonsense.
I couldn’t help but marvel at villains‘ adeptness at putting blame on others.
I knew he acted like this becaues he feared that Eason would blame him for not doing his job well. If I hadn’t known this, I would have been moved by his perfect performance.
He and Eason were villans that deserved to be family members.
I once saw Michael’s signature in Eason’s study. Eason claimed that it was the patient’s information, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. Now I think that the two of them must have had some shameful transactions and secrets. Michael relied on the fact that he was Lola’s legal husband, and I really couldn’t do anything to him.
But with Linda and Joe potentially uncovering his misdeeds, I knew his arrogance would not endure.
During lunch, while Michael was in the restroom, I seized the opportunity to visit Lola.
I cut to the chase.
“I’ve checked everything in the Cupid USB drive.”
Lola suddenly lift her head, scanning the room cautiously before
“Dr. Moore, are you truly willing to help me? I know my brother wronged you in the past. On his behalf, I apologize! I’m prepared to do anything to repay you.”
It turned out that she really knew.
Unlike Eason, Lola, as Lucas‘ biological sister, harbored no animosity towards me.
Even Lola understood that I was not the reason for her suffering.
But Eason, despite his hero facade, regressed into an animal.
No, labeling him as animal was an insult to animals.
I comforted her with a pat on the shoulder.
“Lola, we’re all victims of this tragedy. How could I just stand by and watch?”
“You shouldn’t have taken such a risk. If I hadn’t intervened, if I hadn’t found Cupid USB drive, what would have become of you?”
Lola shook her head bitterly.
“I understand you loved Eason. If I had approached you impulsively, how could you believe the words of a madwoman?”
She had a point; I had only recently confirmed Eason’s infidelity.
But believing such a bizarre claim without evidence was challenging.
“Plus, I stole the USB drive after my hospital discharge, while Michael was occupied with your call. It was his treasure! When I spotted the drone, my instincts fold me it was you, so I swallowed the USB drive and took a gamble.”
So, that was the truth.
“Take care of yourself. I’ll handle the rest. Await my good news!”
With those words, I left the ward and bumped into Michael on his return from the restroom.
His expression mirrored his gloomy mood, as if I owed him a fortune. He deliberately bumped into my shoulder, but I dodged it.
If my hunch was correct, Eason should now be aware of the situation.
As anticipated Eason, originally scheduled to return in three days, arrived home that evening.
Linda’s news of his return made me uneasy.
But since I wasn’t on duty, I had to confront the inevitable.
Upon arriving home from work, I found Eason busy in the kitchen,
There were rose petals leading from the entrance to the bedroom.
When he heard the door open, Eason put down the spatula and moved to embrace me.
I pushed him away.
“No, I just finished work. I’m covered with bacteria and viruses!”
Eason, undeterred, hugged me tightly and gleefully presented me with a surprise.
“Honey, I brought you a surprise. Go on, treasure hunt!”
Under his expectant gaze, I followed the trail of petals to the bedroom.
