Chapter 13 A Guilty Conscience
“Hch Nathan chuckled at her reaction. Even though the woman before him had changed significantly, she was still the same in some ways. The more she resisted, the more suspicious she seemed. His tone was icy. “I’ll know for sure if I take Liam for a paternity test!”
With that, he suddenly exerted force, causing Olivia’s hand, pressing against the door, to instantly go limp. The door swung open abruptly, and Liam happened to come out of the dining room. The boy had noticed that his mom had been gone for a while and hadn’t returned, so he wanted to check on her. To his surprise. he saw Nathan when he looked up.
His eyes lit up. Unable to contain his excitement, he rushed over, squeezing past Olivia to hug Nathan, “Daddy, why are you here?” Nathan stepped back from the collision, looking down at the delighted child. Liam was thrilled and fired off questions rapidly. “Did you come to see me?”
“Mm.” The displeasure on Nathan’s face faded as he nodded. He glanced at Ethan behind him, who approached Liam with a pile of gifts and said politely, “William, these are gifts for you. See if you like them.” Ethan placed everything on the nearby table.
But of course, Liam loved it! He knew it was LEGO and limited–edition figurines just by looking at the packaging! He was overjoyed and about to nod eagerly when he saw Olivia standing beside him from the corner of his eye.
The boy was briefly stunned and immediately became more reserved, carefully hiding how joyful he had felt.
Olivia saw what the child did. She resisted Nathan and the child reuniting, but her heart pained when she saw how clated yet timid Liam felt. She told Nathan, “You must have spent a fortune, Mr. Carter. How much is it? I’ll pay you back!”
Nathan was inexplicably annoyed when she called him ‘Mr. Carter. He felt more furious when he heard her offer him money. He had a sharp, icy gaze. “I came to take Liam for a DNA test today. I’ll have the final say on whether he’s my child!”
“As Liam’s guardian, I disagree.” Olivia stared at him firmly. Nathan smirked, his expression taunting. “You keep trying to stop me. Is it because you have a guilty conscience? Are you worried I’ll find something?” Olivia was suddenly at a loss for words. She realized what he said was true. The more she resisted, the more guilty she appeared. With how much Emily hated her, Olivia was afraid Emily couldn’t accept Liam if they went for another paternity test.
Olivia suddenly thought of something and said confidently and calmly, “I just think it’s unnecessary! Since you insist, Mr. Carter, I can’t stop you. It’s up to you.” She looked down at Liam, “Go with Mr. Carter for the test and come back.” With that, she turned and returned to the dining room, where Mr. Valtor had made a delicious breakfast. She picked up her spoon again, but she had no appetite at all.
In the meantime, Nathan quickly took Liam away! When they returned to the Beverly Hills, Liam was still quiet. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling sad?” Nathan spoke in a much softer tone. He carried Liam to the sofa and reached to pinch his fair, tender cheeks. Liam tugged at his clothes and looked at Nathan. “What if… what if I’m really your son, Daddy?” The boy had been worried. Although he had only met Nathan twice, he liked the man and accepted him wholeheartedly.
Nathan was slightly startled when he heard it. After a moment, he asked, “How is that possible? You already ran a DNA test before. We’re just doing the same test so that your mom will admit it.” He patted Liam’s head. “Don’t be afraid!” Liam felt comforted and nodded vigorously. He wasn’t afraid and was confident that the man before him was his dad.
