Lucy stood off to the side, watching Michael in silence. She assumed he was mad because of how Chloe had spoken to the elders in such a setting.

Lucy couldn’t help but whisper, “Michael, Chloe’s going too far. We’re in public. The Shawn family’s private matters shouldn’t be aired out like this.”
The Shawn family values dignity above all. That’s why Lucy believes dignity is Michael’s top priority.
He frowned slightly. “If it’s a public place, they shouldn’t keep criticizing her.”
He stood up for Chloe, leaving Lucy utterly stunned.
When she first returned to her home country, Chloe was never on her radar.
Whether it was in the past or now, if Lucy wanted something, Chloe never stood a chance.
So, she figured Michael was the same.
They met in college. Michael admired Lucy’s talent and often praised her as the smartest person he’d ever met.
So she naturally assumed Chloe could never be a match for her.

“The Shawn family is renowned, and Michael is their sole heir. If you can’t have children, who’s going to carry on the family legacy?”
Chloe was simply beyond explanation.
She regretted sparing Michael’s feelings and taking the blame
back then.
A tall, broad–shouldered figure emerged from the crowd.
Michael, dressed in a sharp suit, stepped up to Chloe and pulled
her into his arms.

“It’s my call not to have kids for now, so Chloe’s got nothing to
do with it.”
“Chloe?”
She glanced up at him, feeling like Michael’s timing was perfect.
But what’s he getting at?
Why is Michael suddenly taking Chloe’s side?
No matter what, she won this time.
Chloe smirked. “Ms. Shawn, making a baby takes two. No matter how many meds I take, if the issue isn’t with me, there’s nothing I can do.”
The problem isn’t with her… it’s with Michael?
“These days, guys are under a lot of pressure. Michael’s got even more on his plate, so it’s no surprise he struggles with some things.”
Michael zoned out for most of the conversation, but the words. “not great” rang loud and clear.
He kept a smile on his face, but his grip on Chloe tightened slightly.
Michael thought, “I tried to help her out of kindness, and she turned around and said I wasn’t good enough?”
